What is Gourmet Cooking?

Posted in Gourmet Cooking

Gourmet cooking is a little easier to define than home cooking. Gourmet food is served in fine restaurants and is made with only the best ingredients. The recipes are often complex, or they give the illusion of being complex because of the flavours. Gourmet chefs often experiment with ingredients. They find
new and innovative ways to serve old favourites. And more than anything, they create a pleasant dining experience for their guests.

But what a lot of people do not realize is that you can cook gourmet foods at home. The basic steps to cooking gourmet are no different than those to prepare home cooked meals. The only difference is that when cooking gourmet foods, you may need to go to specialty stores to find ingredients.

Chinese Cooking-Influential Cuisine of the World

Posted in Chinese Cooking

It has been said that traditional Chinese cooking is one of the most influential cuisines in the world. The Chinese have invented numerous things that are important to Western cooking, such as pasta and even certain influential cooking techniques.

Today it is one of the most popular ethnic cuisines in the world. However, it is important to note that the Chinese cuisine that is found in some restaurants, especially those in the Unites States, is unlike what traditional Chinese cuisine really is. The Chinese immigrants have adapted their culture
to suit the American palate. This also may be the case in other countries.

The Chinese also have regional cooking. Just like with French and Italian cooking, a lot of the dishes that are served will depend on what is available in the region.

Cooking Tips-Helpful Gems of Knowledge

Posted in Cooking Tips

Ever notice how top chefs seem to have cooking tips for everything? These little gems of knowledge are unexpected because they are simple and easy to execute, but they can save time and hassle in the kitchen.

To peel garlic, place the garlic on a cutting board and lay a chef’s knife flat across it. Press on the knife with the palm of your hand to crush the garlic. The peel will fall away. Apply more pressure if the recipe calls for crushed garlic, or you can just chop or mince as usual.

Lemons are another common ingredient in a lot of foods. However, they can be hard to juice and it is easy for the seeds to get into what you are cooking. To loosen the juices, roll the lemon on our cutting board applying slight pressure as you roll. Or, you can microwave the lemon for about fifteen seconds. To prevent the seeds from getting into your food, squeeze the lemon over a sieve or your fingers.

Cooking Up a Dinner Plan!

Posted in Cooking

You know how those busy days are when sometimes you have a plan for dinner and sometimes you don’t.  Days like these tend to be ones where people make bad food choices, often buying ingredients they don’t even need.  Cooking often becomes frustrating only because it lacks a good plan.

You can easily avoid this by planning out two weeks worth of menus and shopping for the ingredients at the beginning of each week. Look for recipes or have an idea of what you would like to cook and write it down. There is nothing worse than starting a delicious meal only to end up not having the right ingredients for what you are preparing.  So, with a little planning ahead, you can easily have meal ideas planned out and the right ingredients ready to prepare them.

Fun Outdoor Cooking Tips!

Posted in Outdoor Cooking

Outdoor cooking is a lot of fun especially when it is on the campfire. There are several different levels of campfire cooking ranging from the extremely easy to the very difficult. Cooking on a campfire is an art and one that takes some practice. If you are interested in learning how to cook on a campfire, you should remember to start simple. Learn how to do simple things such as roast marshmallows and hot dogs, sausages, and vegetables. These are things that do not require a lot of skill. Basically, all you need to do is find a stick and pierce the item with the stick. Hold it over the flame and rotate it until the item is cooked. Cookbooks and classes are a good way to lean more about these skills.

Special pots are also necessary when cooking on a campfire. Using your regular pots and pans on an open fire is not a good idea. The pots could burn and they also may not distribute heat properly. Invest in a set of cast iron pots that can handle the flames well. The only problem is that they are very heavy so they will not be practical if you need to do a lot of walking.

If you truly want to learn how to cook more complex meals outside, it is a good idea to develop the skills before you absolutely need them. It is frustrating trying new things that are slightly complex. The possibility that something can go wrong is high, and when you are in the woods, you can’t necessarily go to the store and buy a new set of ingredients to try again so its a good idea to have a backup plan. If you are planning to spend some time outdoors, you don’t want to be without food because you had a cooking mishap. Outdoor cooking is a lot of fun when it is done properly and with the right equipment. Invest some time in learning the necessary skills beforehand to ensure an enjoyable experience.

Ways to Learn Easy Home Cooking!

Posted in Home Cooking

Home cooking is something that is often handed down from generation to generation. An older generation teaches the younger generations how to prepare the foods that they enjoy. In a lot of families, this starts from a very young age. Small children are not able to do much in the kitchen, but they can still participate in easier tasks such as stirring and pouring ingredients into the bowl. This helps build their self esteem and gives them the confidence they need to build on their skills as they get older. However, not everyone has the luxury to learn how to cook in this way.

The good news is that there are several ways you can learn about home cooking besides learning from a family member or friend. Great ways to learn are by subscribing to a magazine that focuses on home cooking and trying some of the recipes, watching cooking shows and videos that feature some of your all time favourite home cooked meals, taking a cooking class that will give instructions on various home cooked meals, and by reading cookbooks that focus on home cooking.

What’s Your Motivation for Healthy Cooking?

Posted in Healthy Cooking

Healthy cooking is something that a lot of people embrace. However, everyone has different reasons for doing so. Eating healthy enhances your overall state of health, controls health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, helps you lose and maintain your weight, and gives you more energy.

Take a moment to think of your motivations and reasons for embracing a healthier lifestyle. Write all of them down. They do not have to be one of the reasons mentioned above. But, understanding why you want to eat a healthier diet will provide you with the motivation to continue when you start craving those unhealthy foods not good for your body and healthy lifestyle.

The Italian Cooking Recipe - Family, Food, Fun

Posted in Italian Cooking

Can you imagine eating at the same Italian restaurant several times in a row? One of our favorite things to do after church is to eat out for lunch. For the last few weeks, we have been going to the same local Italian restaurant when we could have gone anywhere. Last week when my wife suggested it, I thought, again, we were just there, but it is always good. The chef had cast some sort of spell on us. Once again, it was incredible and we love it each time. Well, I started thinking about why someone would return to the same restaurant time after time. Of course, it was because the food was delicious, but why, I asked myself. What was it that the chef was doing that made us so look forward to his Italian cooking?

I came to some interesting conclusions that you can use in your kitchen and home to create that same love for your cooking. The food was fresh and the homegrown herbs were wonderful but it had to do with more than just the food. The restaurant presented a great atmosphere that was personal, relaxed and fun. Have you seen those Olive Garden commercials with the big families? You know, “when you’re here you’re family”. It was that kind of thing. The chef comes out and talks to you, they put on your favorite music and everyone is friendly and easy going. Italian cooking can be a great way to enjoy food and family.

Set the atmosphere in your kitchen and make the experience enjoyable for your family as you enjoy the cooking. Fix a couple of simple appetizers to enjoy casually around the table as dinner nears completion. Get the family involved in the kitchen or setting the table. Put on some music, sing and enjoy. Now, when it comes to Italian cooking you have to think fresh. Get the freshest ingredients, pastas, vegetables and herbs you can find or better yet make and grow some of your own.

Here are some useful tips and special techniques for Italian cooking. In many ways the basics of cooking pasta is one of the most important cooking techniques that makes Italian cooking great. Make sure that if you are following an Italian recipe that you follow the directions carefully. Always make sure you are cooking the pasta in enough water. You should plan to use about four quarts of water for eight ounces of pasta. Cover the pot and bring water to full boil before adding pasta. Leave the pot uncovered while you are cooking, and use a pasta fork to stir the pasta. You can start testing the pasta for doneness a few minutes before the recommended time to see how it is coming along. You should also be looking for only a speck of white left in the center of the pasta. You need to drain the pasta but do not rinse it. Then return your pasta to a warm pot or skillet with sauce in it. At this point, you can add salt to the water to add flavor to the pasta but if you will be paired your pasta with sauce it is not necessary.

Traditionally, in Italian cooking of meats you would usually use the stove top. You want to brown meat in olive oil or butter with wine. Don’t forget you should loosen scrapings from pan and as alcohol evaporates, lower the heat on the pan and simmer meat until tender.

Here is a nice way that you can make your favorite meal a favorite for your family and friends too. Usually, Italian cooking comes in several courses. Present your family with each course and it will create a memorable and enjoyable experience. The first course is usually a soup, pasta, or risotto. The second course is a meat, like chicken or fish, with a vegetable and followed by a salad. The dessert course is usually a fruit, but you can really make it something special by offering a sweet treat.

Cooking School, It’s An Adventure

Posted in Cooking School

When it comes to cooking school and a career in cooking, you are developing a lifestyle and life path. Remember the US Navy slogan “it’s more than a job, it’s an adventure? Well that is true for you too. As you set, your course to be the best you can in cooking you are also embarking on one of the greatest adventures of your life. Not only will you learn the skills and techniques you need in cooking school but also you will develop life long friends and valuable resources. The love of cooking is a great starting line but it will not be enough by itself.

Training is important and cooking school can refine your love of cooking into a skill that will possibly earn you a lot of money as well as respect and appreciation for your knowledge and ability. The knowing “how to” aspect of cooking is what separates the good from the best and will allow you to achieve excellence on higher levels. You already have the desire; you just need the “how to”.

My Brother in Law is from England and loves to cook crepes. He is actually very passionate about it and loves to cook them at family gatherings. However, it is also the only thing he knows how to prepare. Although you might consider him an expert on crepes, his knowledge base and practical cooking experience doesn’t extend much further. This is exactly why you should go ahead and take the challenge of going to cooking school like you have been considering. You will be the better for it and your family and friends or customers will reap the benefits along with you. Boy I wish my Brother in law had gone to cooking school so we could have something at reunions besides crepes even though he makes awesome crepes.

Cooking schools give you the basics that you need to survive in commercial kitchens as well as practical knowledge about hoe to run your own home kitchen. You learn things like nutrition that is so important today with people exercising and being calorie conscience. As you know, cooking schools have their students after graduation being hired by major hotels, resorts and health spas. One of the most important aspects of that job is to be able to put together tasty but nutritious meals that will please the clientele looking for health and long life.

As you prepare for your future cooking school will also give you the foundation of food storage and safe food handling practices that will set the foundation for you to build on. You will also learn and become an expert on all of those fabulous herbs and spices. Knowing when you can substitute dried herbs for fresh ones and how to properly store fresh herbs to keep their flavor will put your sauces and marinades on everyone’s favorites list.

Without a cooking school to guide us, how would we learn about high and low heat techniques, thickeners, pan searing, quick pan frying or cooking at high altitudes? It is the cooking techniques that you need to learn and that you can gain from cooking school. You will also come away with an arsenal of tools, knives, kitchen equipment and neat gadgets to make cooking easier and better.

If you want more than just a job in a kitchen then don’t settle for less. Invest yourself in the things you love and get the training and skills to take your love of cooking to its next level. Set a life path and make it an adventure, be your best and let your talent shine. Reach for your dreams and investigate cooking school.
